Why Wright Performance?

What is Wright Performance?

Wright Performance is the product of a lengthy foray into the training of elite CrossFit athletes in an attempt to understand what makes some of the top tier competitors progress at the rate they do. I have read through a myriad of programming styles using numerous work/rest variations, and one thing is for certain in the training programs of modern CrossFit competitors: they are strong as hell.

In a sport that is all about intensity, being stronger allows one to impart more force in the same amount of time as someone who is comparatively weaker. This correlates to more power production, and in the sport of CrossFit power = intensity. The majority of our year, therefore, must be dedicated to becoming as strong as possible with sport-specific training occurring prior to the Open and continuing through the Games. The greatest tools to increase one's ability to produce large amounts of power are the Olympic lifts; these lifts combined with their associated supplemental exercises must form the cornerstone of any successful program aiming to prepare an athlete for the sport of CrossFit.

Wright Performance is designed to follow a competitive "season" in order to best prepare athletes for the Open, Regionals, and Games. Like any sport, there will be both an in-season period and an off-season period. The foci of these two periods will be different to reflect the training needs of each. Conditioning will be maintained during the strength period and will receive more focus leading up to the competition season, while skill work related to gymnastics and other CrossFit movements will be emphasized year-round. These things combined should adequately prepare any athlete for the competition they must face during the Games season each year.
